Is there room in the agenda for a flat fixing tutorial? Id really like to do this for the group and my non violent communication talk is going to be brief.

I'm all for it! I know many people were interested in this and there's no reason not to do it ASAP.

Are y'all excited?
Who's coming?
Any other skills that people can bring to the meeting?
Who's bringing what?

I'd really like something special for the meeting. We could make a plan to ride together or do some crimes. Is anyone interested in making/decorating a pair of panties as an activity?

Yep, I'm excited! I'm coming to the meeting...not sure what food I'll bring yet. It has to be something that can sit in my car for a while. scratch
In terms of skills I could teach, the only thing I can think of right now is sewing. If we're making underwear maybe it'd come in handy? I did see a Youtube video once about how to make underwear out of t-shirts.

I actually have a flat tire! I can bring it with me....is there anything else we need to bring, like tubes or something?
Also, what's the status of the zine? Maybe we could try to finish it at this meeting if that didn't happen at the last one.

I'm sorry guys! I still don't know the address! I joined the mailing group but I haven't gotten anything. Is it still on tonight? Or is there something I'm doing wrong?

Hope I still make it. I've been looking forward to this all week. If it doesn't work out I'll for sure come to the next meeting.

Hey digforfire,

The meeting is still on! Sorry you haven't received a location yet. If you want to private message me your phone number I'll just text the address to you. I know it's late notice, but we usually don't start right on time and there's no harm in being a little late! Hope you see this in time!

Re: Meeting 4/1/12, 8pm, Lorae's

Post  KevinMcAllister on Tue Apr 03, 2012 4:54 pm

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share some feelings I had about the last meeting. This isn't easy for me:

I felt shy to do both skill shares. It was hard for me to talk about the nvc, but I got through it and people listened and participated. When I started the wheel/flat skill share, everyone started talking immediately and it became really hard for me to teach. When I ran into problems with Emily's tire, the situation became even more stressful and the noise of the room was completely unbearable to me. I felt really bad for Emily too, who obviously wanted to fix their wheel, but I was feeling so embarrassed I couldn't even communicate with them any longer. I really wished that the group would have thought about my position, and the fact that I was putting myself out in the spotlight to try to teach everyone something valuable. Even if you found it boring, I really wish you would have either removed yourself, of pretended to care. I know I was not the only person in this meeting to be interrupted or talked over, but I found this to be a little extreme.

I understand that we had a lot of fun with the meeting before this. It was fun to just have a few of us there and bond and throw out the agenda. This clearly does not work with a larger group. I hope that in future meetings we can be on topic and progressive, and find time to bond after. In other meetings I attend, we decide before hand how much time we would like to devote to each subject, and it encourages us to stay on topic and get it done. I think this would really help us.

Lastly, I would like to voice my feelings on the kitchen after everyone had left. Most people had left their plates right where they were eating with food still on their plate. At this point I felt really unappreciated. I could only imagine doing something like this if I were somehow in the house of someone I don't like. I don't think anyone in our group is evil, but I was really shocked to have been treated this way.

Re: Meeting 4/1/12, 8pm, Lorae's

Post  aemilius on Tue Apr 03, 2012 5:46 pm

Hey Lorae, thanks for sharing how you felt, and for explaining how things were going from your perspective. I agree, I found myself getting flustered, trying to get the tire done before people got too antsy, and I wasn't even the one teaching it. So, I can understand your frustration. It's hard to be on the spot like that. As for leaving dirty dishes around, apologies are definitely in order. Next time we meet at someone's house, maybe we should build in some clean-up time at the end of the meeting, before everyone gets too tired. We could make like Girl Scouts and leave the place better than we found it. Wink *hugs* if you want them?

And yeah, if we're doing a meeting in which we're trying to get a certain number of things done, we can't go off-topic as much as we did. One thing that could work is having one person designated to bring the group back on track in case of a tangent. If there is a designated person, whoever is speaking/interrupted will realize that it's nothing personal. If we had a rotating leader/facilitator for each meeting, it could accomplish the same thing. I think the main functions of this person would be keeping track of time, keeping the conversation on topic, and noting the order of people speaking/keeping stack. We talked a bit about this in previous meetings, but never really enacted it. Having people learn and practice facilitation skills could be just another part of PWave.

It also helps if the "business" part of the meeting has an end time...then we could socialize afterward if we want. There's that saying, 'tasks expand to fill the time allotted' which I've found to generally be true.

And maybe I'm getting old, but 8pm on a Sunday is just kinda late, especially if the meeting is getting long. I know at least for me, my energy was really fading by the end...and that never helps.

Post  WhatFreshHeck on Tue Apr 03, 2012 6:40 pm

Thanks for sharing this, Lorae. I apologize for my part in worsening an already stressful situation. If we keep to a stricter schedule and make sure meetings don't run too late, I think we can avoid people getting antsy and make sure we have enough time to clean up any messes we make from crafts/skill shares/food.

As the note taker, I'll volunteer for the responsibility of keeping things moving and make sure we get through agenda stuff in a timely manner, but if other folks want to moderate, I'm all for it.

That might be a lot of work for one person...maybe we could ask for volunteers at the beginning of the meetings. I wouldn't mind facilitating, either, I've done it before.

Lorae, thanks for sharing this. I apologize sincerely for my part in creating the hectic atmosphere toward the end of the meeting. Thank you so much for providing the NVC workshop - you did a great job facilitating it. Let's adopt your suggestion of deciding on a time limit for topics.

I agree with Emily that 8pm is pretty late. Should we change meetings to 7pm instead, and start on time? Part of the reason they run so late is that people often show up after half an hour after the announced time. Let's also dedicate time at the end of meetings to clean up so that the host isn't left with dishes like Lorae was.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I am personally very sorry for causing any more stress for you and potentially being insensitive at the moment. I truly feel terrible about this but thank you so much for putting this on my, and all of our, radars and I will personally pay much more attention to checking myself and making sure that I am behaving in a respectful manor.

Also addressing what you said about skill shares, I was personally very interested in learning how to fix a flat tire, but was unaware that this was happening! Maybe I just need to check the forum more often for updates on meetings, but I think that some way of making sure that these sort of things are announced so that everybody can come prepared and ready to learn! (for instance i would have liked to bring in a wheel of my bike so that i could familiarize myself with parts and have a more tactile approach to learn this skill for future reference)

Thank you all. Your responses make me feel heard and understood.

Like I've said before, any of you can come to Bike Kitchen on Saturdays to learn whatever you'd like, which includes flat fixing. I teach there every weekend from 12-3. This is a very chaotic environment, but one that I am used to.
